Video Download Quality Guide
Updated 2026-07-22
Not sure which video quality to download? This guide compares 720p, 1080p, and 4K — what each looks like, file sizes, and which quality is best for your needs.
720p (HD)
720p is HD quality and works well on phones and tablets. File size is small — a 10-minute video is typically 50–100 MB. Quality is good for sharing and offline viewing. Perfect if you want to save storage space.
1080p (Full HD)
1080p is Full HD and looks crisp on larger screens — laptops, tablets, and TVs. File size is moderate — a 10-minute video is typically 150–250 MB. Quality is excellent for most uses. Best balance of quality and file size.
4K (Ultra HD)
4K is ultra-high quality and looks stunning on large screens and 4K TVs. File size is large — a 10-minute video can be 500 MB to 1+ GB. Only worth it if you have a 4K display and plenty of storage. Not all platforms offer 4K.
Which quality to choose?
For phones: 720p is plenty. For computers and most TVs: 1080p is ideal — and it's also the highest quality VoomReel downloads support. Consider your storage: 1080p balances quality and size well for most uses.
Why VoomReel caps at 1080p rather than offering 4K
This wasn't an arbitrary limit — it's a deliberate ceiling that prevents a real failure mode. Without a cap, requesting the "best available" quality can mean 4K or 8K source files that blow past a sane download-size limit, and when every video option gets filtered out as too large, some tools silently fall back to whatever fits — including, in the worst case, an audio-only file with no video at all. Capping at 1080p keeps every download in a predictable, sane range from the start, so that failure mode simply can't happen.
Resolution isn't the only thing that affects how good a video looks
Two videos at the same resolution can look noticeably different depending on bitrate (how much data is used per second of video) — a heavily compressed 1080p clip can look softer than a well-encoded 720p one. VoomReel downloads whatever bitrate the platform itself already encoded the video at; there's no additional compression applied on top.
Most social video isn't shot in 4K anyway
A lot of what people download — TikToks, Reels, short clips shot on a phone — is recorded and uploaded at 1080p or below to begin with, since that's what the platform's own app captures and compresses for fast uploading. For that kind of content, a 1080p cap isn't actually giving anything up; there's often no higher-quality source to miss.
FAQ
Can I tell if a video is 1080p before downloading?
Not from a quality menu — VoomReel automatically saves at the best quality available up to 1080p Full HD, so there's nothing to check first.
How much storage does 4K take?
4K videos take 5–10x more storage than 720p. A movie-length 4K video can be several GB — one reason VoomReel caps downloads at 1080p.
Is 1080p worth the extra file size?
Yes. On laptops and tablets, the quality improvement is noticeable. For phones, 720p is usually fine.
Can I downgrade a 1080p video to 720p?
No, not without re-encoding (which loses quality). Download at the quality you need.
Do all platforms offer 4K downloads?
VoomReel caps downloads at 1080p Full HD across every supported platform, regardless of whether the source video is available in 4K.
Will a 1080p download ever look worse than watching it on the platform?
No — you're getting the same file the platform itself would stream to you at that quality, not a re-compressed copy.
Does video length affect available quality?
No — length and resolution are independent. A short clip and a long one at the same source quality download at the same resolution.
