How to download a GIF from Giphy

Should I take the GIF or the MP4?
The MP4 if you are saving it or sending it to a phone: same animation, far smaller. The GIF if you are pasting somewhere that only accepts .gif, which still includes a lot of forums and older chat apps.
Why is the MP4 so much smaller?
GIF is a very old format with no modern compression. Video codecs were designed for exactly this and do it far better. On ten trending GIFs measured here it was 3 to 31 times, about 7 typically.
Should I take the GIF or the MP4 for a sticker?
The GIF. It keeps the sticker's transparent background; an MP4 cannot hold transparency, so Giphy's MP4 of a sticker sits on solid white.
Is the GIF the full-size original?
Yes. Giphy keeps several sizes and the grid shows a scaled one; what you get is the upload.
Do Giphy Clips keep their sound?
Yes. A Clip link gives you the clip as an MP4 with its audio, at the largest size Giphy keeps for it (up to 1080p, depending on the upload), plus the GIF.
Do sticker links work?
Yes. Sticker, GIF and Clip links are all recognised, and so is a bare i.giphy.com media link.
Does the file go through your server?
No. Your browser fetches it directly from Giphy, so it costs us no bandwidth and we never hold a copy.
Is there a watermark?
No. Nothing is added. Anything you see was in the GIF as uploaded.
