How to Download GIFs from Giphy

Paste a GIF's link into VoomReel and you get two files to choose from: the GIF itself and an MP4 of the same animation. On ten trending GIFs we measured, the MP4 was 3 to 31 times smaller, about 7 times typically. Here is which one to take, how to save it on a phone or a computer, and what is different for stickers and Clips.

Open the GIF on giphy.com or in the Giphy app and copy its link, with the share button or from the browser's address bar. Sticker and Clip links work the same way.

Open voomreel.com, or the Giphy downloader page, and paste the link into the box at the top.

Download photo saves the GIF, Download video the MP4. On Android and on a computer the file saves straight away; on iPhone it opens in a new tab, where you save it to Photos.
GIF or MP4: which to take
Take the GIF when it is going somewhere that only accepts .gif files, such as many forums, some chat apps and email signatures. It is the same animation Giphy shows, at its full size.
Take the MP4 for everything else: keeping it on a phone, or sending it in an app that plays video. GIF is a very old format with weak compression, so the MP4 is a fraction of the size. Neither file has sound: an ordinary Giphy GIF is a silent loop.
Stickers: take the GIF
A Giphy sticker has a transparent background, and only the GIF keeps it. MP4 cannot store transparency, so Giphy's MP4 of a sticker sits on solid white, which shows as a white box on anything that is not white.
Giphy Clips come with their sound
Clips are Giphy's short videos with audio. A Clip link gives you the clip as an MP4 with its sound, at the largest size Giphy keeps for it, plus the GIF. Two of the three Clips we measured came down at 1080p and the third at 480p, the largest Giphy keeps of it.
The GIF of a Clip is silent and large: the GIF of a 13-second Clip was 17 MB. Take the MP4 unless you need a .gif.
Saving on iPhone
The file opens in a new tab in Safari. For a GIF, touch and hold it and choose Save to Photos: Photos keeps it moving and files it in the Animated album. For an MP4, tap the Share icon and choose Save Video.
Saving on Android and on a computer
On Android the file goes to the Downloads folder, and Google Photos or the Gallery shows it, with a GIF still animated. On a computer it lands wherever your browser saves downloads, ready to drag into a chat, a document or a slide.

giphy.com links to a GIF, a sticker or a Clip (giphy.com/gifs/…, giphy.com/stickers/…, giphy.com/clips/…), and links straight to Giphy's media, such as i.giphy.com/media/…/giphy.gif.
Using what you save
GIFs on Giphy come from artists, brands, studios and ordinary users. Sharing one in a chat is what they are made for; using one in an advert or a product is something to ask its owner about first.
