Plenty of tools promise Stories and photos, then fail or ask for your password. Here is the honest picture of what can be reached without logging in — photo posts genuinely can be saved, Stories genuinely cannot — and how to tell the difference before you hand anything over.
Videos, Reels and photos: yes
Public video posts, Reels and photo posts all download with no login. A photo comes back at the size Instagram actually stored — measured at 1440×1920 on a recent post, several hundred kilobytes of real picture rather than the scaled-down copy the feed shows.
Carousels work too: paste the post link once and every slide is listed separately, in the order it was posted, so a mixed post of videos and photos gives you all of it.
Stories are the exception
Stories need a logged-in session, and that has not changed. Any tool offering them either asks for your Instagram password or leans on something that breaks constantly.
The distinction is real rather than cautious on our part: a public photo post is visible to anyone holding the link, while a Story is visible only to a logged-in account the creator has admitted. One is public content; the other is someone's account access.
How to stay safe
Never enter your Instagram password into a third-party downloader. If a site demands it, close the tab. A tool working with public content has no reason to want your credentials.
What about Highlights?
Highlights are Stories a creator has pinned permanently to their profile, but they are still Stories underneath — so the same login requirement applies, and they are left alone for the same reason regular Stories are.
What a site asking for your password is really doing
If a tool wants your Instagram login to “unlock” Stories, it is using your own session to make the request you could make yourself while logged in. The download is not magic; it is borrowing your account's access. The risk is that your password now sits on a server you do not control, and Instagram's automated-access detection can flag or lock accounts used that way through a third party.
A safer way to keep your own Stories
For your own content, Instagram lets you save a Story to your device before it expires (the Save option in the Story viewer), and lets you download everything in bulk through Settings → Your Activity → Download Your Information. Both are official, and neither asks you to trust a third-party site with your password.
An export strips the original capture dates, which matters if you care when a photo was actually taken. There is a separate tool here that repairs them, and it runs entirely in your browser — the export file is never uploaded anywhere.
