How to Download YouTube Videos on PC

Updated 2026-09-20

Desktop is where a YouTube file is genuinely useful — for editing, for a presentation, for a flight with no wifi. It is also where the software downloads and browser extensions are, and neither is necessary.

  1. 1
    Copy the link

From the address bar, or the Share button under the video. youtu.be short links, Shorts links and music.youtube.com links all work.

  2. 2
    Paste it into VoomReel

Open the home page in another tab and paste the link into the box.

  3. 3
    Download

Click Download. The file lands in your Downloads folder as an .mp4.

Premium's offline downloads are not files

This trips people up, and it is worth clearing first. YouTube Premium does offer downloads, but what it saves is encrypted and locked inside the YouTube app. It cannot be opened in a player, moved to another device, attached to anything or imported into an editor, and it expires.

On a computer the Premium download is not even that — it is a browser feature tied to being signed in. If you want an actual file on disk, Premium is not the route to it.

Why YouTube needs assembling and TikTok does not

YouTube stores a video as separate streams: several video-only renditions at different sizes, and audio-only tracks alongside them. Your browser fetches one of each and plays them together — there is no single complete file sitting on a server for most videos.

So a download has to fetch both and write them into one container. That is why a YouTube download takes a moment longer than a TikTok one, and why silent YouTube downloads are so common elsewhere: take the video stream and stop, and you get a video that plays perfectly with no sound. Nothing errored; the audio was simply never fetched.

What the file will be

An MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, capped at 1080p in either orientation — so a landscape 1920x1080 and a vertical 1080x1920 Short both come through at full size.

H.264 and AAC are not an arbitrary choice. YouTube's best renditions are VP9 or AV1 in a WebM container with Opus audio, which plays in browsers and VLC and is refused by a great many editors, older TVs and upload forms. Asking for the pair MP4 was built around is what makes the file open everywhere.

The audio codec matters as much as the container, and this is the subtle one: an MP4 holding Opus audio is valid and plays in Chrome, while QuickTime, the stock Windows player and iOS Photos show the picture with no sound at all. AAC is asked for first for exactly that reason.

File sizes, which matter more on desktop

Desktop is where people download long videos, and 1080p is roughly 100 MB for ten minutes as a rough guide — more for high-motion footage, less for a static talking head.

That is also why 1440p and 4K are outside the cap. The files grow faster than the visible improvement, and the same download has to work on a phone.

A video uploaded at 480p has no better version to fetch, whatever quality a dropdown offers. No downloader can add detail that was never uploaded.

Why no software and no extension

Desktop downloader applications want an installer, admin rights and a permanent place on your machine, and they bundle things. Extensions ask to read and change data on every site you visit — the broadest permission a browser grants — and update themselves silently afterwards.

A web page needs neither. It sees the link you paste, and closing the tab ends its access completely.

What will not download

Private and unlisted-with-restrictions videos, members-only uploads and anything behind a purchase — all require an account to view at all.

Age-restricted videos, for the same reason: YouTube withholds them from signed-out viewers.

Region-blocked videos, and live streams while still live. Once a stream is archived as a normal video it behaves like any other.

FAQ

Can I download YouTube videos on PC without software?

Yes. It runs in the browser — nothing installed, no admin rights, no account.

Is a YouTube Premium download a file?

No. It is encrypted, locked inside the YouTube app, cannot be moved or edited, and expires.

What quality will I get?

Up to 1080p in either orientation. 1440p and 4K are outside the cap because the files grow faster than the visible gain.

Why are some YouTube downloads silent?

Because YouTube stores picture and sound separately and the tool fetched only the video. A second cause is Opus audio inside an MP4, which is valid but silent in QuickTime, the Windows player and iOS Photos.

How big will the file be?

Roughly 100 MB for ten minutes at 1080p, more for high-motion footage.

Does it work on Windows, Mac and Linux?

Yes. Nothing runs on your machine, so the operating system does not matter.

Do Shorts work on desktop?

Yes, and they keep their full vertical resolution rather than being cropped to a landscape cap.

Can I download age-restricted videos?

No. Those require a signed-in account, which is never used here.
