How to Download Reddit Videos on PC
Updated 2026-09-20
There is one thing worth knowing before anything else on this page: right-clicking a Reddit video on your computer and choosing Save video as gives you a file with no sound. That is not a bug in your browser, and it is the single most common reason people go looking for a Reddit downloader.
- 1Copy the post link
From the address bar on the post page. Both the long reddit.com/r/…/comments/… form and the short /s/ link work, and old.reddit.com links work too.
- 2Paste it into VoomReel
Open the home page in another tab and paste the link into the box.
- 3Download
Click Download. You get one .mp4 with the picture and sound already joined.
Why Save video as gives you silence
Reddit does not store a video as one file. It stores the picture and the sound as two separate streams on v.redd.it and has the player fetch both, which is the same approach YouTube uses.
Your browser's right-click menu only knows about the one the video element points at, which is the picture. So Save video as hands you a perfectly good video that is completely silent, with no error and no warning — and people reasonably conclude the post had no audio.
Getting the sound means fetching the second stream and writing both into one file. That step is the entire difference between a usable download and the silent one your browser gives you.
Old Reddit, new Reddit, and the app's short links
All of them work. old.reddit.com, the current site and the reddit.com/r/…/s/… short link the mobile app copies all point at the same post, and the short form is resolved automatically.
On desktop the address bar is the simplest source — there is no need to open a share menu at all.
Crossposts point somewhere else
A crosspost is a link to another post, not a copy of it. If a download seems to fetch the wrong thing, open the original post the crosspost points at and use that address instead.
The same applies to link posts. A great many Reddit posts are links out to YouTube, Imgur or a news site, and those are that site's files rather than Reddit's.
Images and GIFs, since you are already here
An image post returns the picture at the size it was uploaded, rather than the resized preview a right-click saves you.
Most animated posts are not .gif files. Reddit converts animations to video on upload because a video of the same animation is a fraction of the size, so they download as silent MP4s — nothing was lost, there was never any audio.
What will not download
Private and quarantined subreddits, and anything you would have to be logged in to see. VoomReel never signs in.
Deleted posts, and videos removed by moderation.
NSFW posts behind a click-through are visible to a signed-out visitor and do work; a login wall is different from a warning screen.
FAQ
Why is my Reddit download silent?
Because Reddit stores picture and sound separately and your browser's Save video as takes only the picture. VoomReel fetches both and joins them.
Do I need software on my PC?
No. It runs in the browser, with nothing installed and no account.
Does old.reddit.com work?
Yes, as do the current site and the app's short /s/ links.
Where does the file go?
Your browser's Downloads folder, unless you have set it to ask each time.
Can I download a gallery post?
The images that can be resolved from the post, yes. Reddit does not expose every gallery item readably from outside, so open the individual image if one is missing.
Can I download from a private subreddit?
No. Only posts a signed-out visitor can see.
Does it work on Windows, Mac and Linux?
Yes. Nothing runs on your machine.
