How to Download a Facebook Live Video
Updated 2026-10-03
The short answer: yes, but not while it is live. During the broadcast there is no finished file for anyone to fetch. Once the stream ends and Facebook posts it as a replay, it is an ordinary video post — and VoomReel downloads those. Here is the full workflow.
- 1Wait for the broadcast to end
A live stream is still being written, so there is no complete file yet. When it ends, the host can publish the recording as a replay — a normal video post on their Page or profile.
- 2Copy the replay's link
Open the replay, tap ⋯ or Share, and choose Copy link. An fb.watch short link works the same way.
- 3Paste it into VoomReel
Tap Download. The replay is fetched and saved like any public Facebook video, sound included.
Why the live itself cannot be downloaded while it is live
A broadcast does not exist as a file yet. Facebook serves it as a stream of small pieces that are still being produced — there is no complete MP4 sitting anywhere for a downloader to take.
That is why every tool that promises to grab a live broadcast in progress is really screen-recording or capturing pieces, with the gaps and the quality loss that implies. Waiting for the end is not a limitation of the tool; it is how the content works.
The replay is an ordinary video post
Once the host ends the stream and keeps it, Facebook publishes the recording as a regular video on the Page or profile. It gets the same kind of link as any other Facebook video — a /videos/ address, a Watch link, or a short fb.watch one — and all of those paste into VoomReel directly.
Nothing about it being a former live changes how the link is handled. VoomReel saves the ready-made MP4 that Facebook offers with the sound already in it, the same kind of file it saves for any other Facebook video.
When there is no replay to find
Publishing the replay is the host's choice. If the stream was deleted after it ended, or never kept at all, there is nothing to download — for you or for anyone else. Since February 2025 Facebook also removes Live replays automatically after 30 days unless the host keeps them, so an older replay may simply be gone.
A replay can also be limited to followers or a group rather than public. VoomReel never signs in to Facebook, so it can only reach what a logged-out visitor could open. The quick test: if the link plays in a private browsing window, it will download.
What quality to expect
Facebook keeps a replay in several versions. Download saves the ready-made one with the sound built in, which for replays is often standard definition: on five public news-channel replays measured in October 2026, it was 640×360 every time, even where the stream itself had been HD. When Facebook holds a sharper copy, an HD button appears under Download and joins that video with its sound, up to 1080p.
Neither file is re-encoded on the way. Downloads are capped at 2 GB per file; at the ready-made quality, a replay of four and a half hours measured 885 MB, and the HD button is offered only when the sharper file fits under the cap.
Your own live streams
If it was your broadcast, you do not need a downloader at all. Facebook's own tools let a Page or profile download its ended Lives, and Export your information in Accounts Center exports your content in bulk.
Those routes get you the original from your own account — the best copy there is.
If the link fails
Almost always because the replay is not public: the Page unpublished it, it is followers-only, or the account is gone. Open the link in a private or incognito browser tab first — if it will not play there, it is not publicly available and no downloader can change that.
FAQ
Can I download a Facebook Live while it is still running?
No. During the broadcast there is no finished file to fetch. Wait for the stream to end and the replay to be posted, then download that.
Where do I find the replay?
On the host's Page or profile, usually under their Videos tab, as a normal video post. Open it and copy its link from the ⋯ or Share menu.
Which link shapes work?
The same ones as any Facebook video: the /videos/ address, a facebook.com/watch link, the /share/ link the app hands out, and short fb.watch links — short forms are resolved automatically.
Why did the replay download fail?
Almost always because it is not public: deleted, followers-only, or from a removed account. If the link does not play in a private browser tab, it cannot be fetched.
Does the live chat download too?
No. The replay's chat and reactions are Facebook's overlay, not part of the video file, so the MP4 is the picture and sound only.
How large can the file be?
Downloads are capped at 2 GB per file, which comfortably covers an ordinary live replay of a few hours.
Can I download someone else's deleted live?
No. If the host did not keep a replay, or removed it later, there is no copy left for anyone to fetch.
