How to Download a Twitter/X GIF

Updated 2026-09-19

If you have saved a GIF from X and been handed a silent .mp4, nothing went wrong. X does not store GIFs as GIFs, and has not for years. Here is what it does store, why that is better than it sounds, and how to save one.

  1. 1
    Copy the post link

Open the post with the GIF, tap Share and choose Copy link. x.com and twitter.com links both work, and the ?s= tracking the share sheet adds is ignored.

  2. 2
    Paste it into VoomReel

Open the VoomReel home page and paste the link into the box.

  3. 3
    Download

Tap Download. You get the MP4 X itself serves for that post.

X converts every GIF to video on upload

When you attach a GIF on X, it is transcoded to an H.264 MP4 with no audio track and a loop flag, and the original GIF is discarded. What is on the post from that moment on is a video file. The little GIF badge in the corner is a label the player draws, not a statement about the format.

So a downloader that hands you an MP4 is not converting anything or losing quality. It is giving you the file that exists. A tool that hands you a real .gif has re-encoded the video back into a far older format — bigger, fewer colours, and worse looking than what you started with.

Why the saved file is silent

Because the post is silent. The transcode drops audio entirely, since a GIF never had any. This is the single most common reason people think a download failed: the file plays, the picture is right, and there is no sound.

If you want to be sure the silence is the post and not the download, open the post on X with your volume up. A GIF post has no audio controls at all.

When you genuinely do want a .gif file

Some places — older forums, a few chat apps, certain CMSes — will only accept .gif. In that case, download the MP4 here and convert it locally with any video tool. Converting on your own machine is the same work a website would do, without handing your file to a third party first.

Expect the .gif to be several times larger than the MP4 for the same clip. That size difference is exactly why X stopped storing GIFs in the first place.

FAQ

Why does my downloaded Twitter GIF have no sound?

Because it never had any. X converts GIFs to silent MP4s on upload, so the post itself contains no audio track.

Can I get the original .gif file?

No, and neither can anyone else — X discards it at upload. Any tool offering a .gif has re-encoded the video into one.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes. The file saves to your Photos or Files app like any other video, in any modern browser.

Is the quality reduced?

No. You get the exact file X serves. It is already better quality than the GIF would have been.

Why does the GIF loop on X but not in my player?

Looping is a flag the X player honours. Most desktop players ignore it; most phone galleries loop short videos anyway.

Do I need an X account?

No. VoomReel never signs in and only sees what a logged-out visitor sees.
