VK Video Quality Explained

VK downloads range from 360p to 1080p, and which one you get is decided by the upload rather than by the downloader. Here is what is actually going on.

VK transcodes on upload, and not always to 1080p

When a video is uploaded, VK produces a set of renditions from it — typically 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p and, if the source was good enough, 1080p. It cannot create detail that was not in the upload, so a video shot on an old phone and posted at 480p has no 1080p version and never will.

So a 360p download usually means the upload itself was small, not that something went wrong. Check what VK's own player offers in its quality menu — if 1080p is not in that list, it does not exist.

Older videos are often lower quality

VK has been running since 2006 and has not re-encoded its back catalogue to modern resolutions. A video from 2011 is likely to top out at 360p or 480p simply because that was a normal upload size then.
