Why Niconico Videos Are Blocked Outside Japan
Updated 2026-09-19
If a Niconico link fails for you, the most likely reason is not the link and not the downloader. Niconico geo-locks a large part of its catalogue to Japan, and that block applies to your own browser exactly as it applies to any tool.
- 1Check the id
Look at the end of the address. Ids starting sm or nm are ordinary user uploads. Ids starting so are usually channel or official uploads — the ones most often locked to Japan.
- 2Open it in your own browser
If Niconico itself says you cannot watch it from your region, no downloader can change that.
- 3For everything else, paste the link into VoomReel
Ordinary public videos download as an MP4 with the audio merged in.
What the block actually is
Niconico checks where the request comes from and refuses to serve the video outside Japan for a large share of its channel and official content. The page still loads; the video will not play. It is the platform's own licensing restriction, applied before any file is offered.
This is worth being precise about because it is invisible from the outside: the post exists, the link is correct, and the failure looks identical to a broken tool. VoomReel names this case specifically rather than telling you your link might be wrong.
sm, nm and so
sm and nm are the historic prefixes for user uploads. These are usually viewable anywhere and download normally.
so is typically a channel or official upload. These carry the licensing that comes with commercial content, which is where the region locks and membership requirements live.
What else will not download
Members-only and premium videos require a logged-in account to view at all. VoomReel never signs in, so it sees only what a logged-out visitor sees.
Live programmes are not posted video files. If one is published afterwards as a normal video, that page works.
Deleted videos are gone — no tool recovers those, whatever it claims.
FAQ
Can a downloader get around the Japan block?
No. The file is not served outside Japan at all, so there is nothing to fetch. A tool claiming otherwise is guessing or lying.
How do I tell before trying?
Open the video in your own browser. If Niconico refuses it there, it will refuse it everywhere.
Do sm ids ever get blocked?
Rarely. The locks are concentrated on so ids, which are channel and official uploads.
Do the danmaku comments come with the download?
No. Comments are drawn by Niconico's player over the video and are not part of the video file.
Does a nico.ms link work?
Yes. The Share button's short link is resolved automatically.
Do I need a Niconico account?
No, and that is also why members-only videos cannot be reached.
