Douyin vs TikTok
Updated 2026-09-19
Douyin and TikTok look like the same product with two names. They are not — they are two separate services with separate catalogues, separate accounts and separate video ids, and a link from one is meaningless to the other.
- 1Work out which one you have
douyin.com or a v.douyin.com share link is Douyin. tiktok.com or vm./vt.tiktok.com is TikTok.
- 2Paste it into VoomReel
Both platforms are supported; you do not have to say which.
- 3Download
You get an MP4 without the on-screen watermark where the platform offers a clean rendition.
Two apps, one company, no shared catalogue
Douyin is ByteDance's Chinese service and TikTok is its international one. They run on separate infrastructure with separate uploads. A creator posting to both uploads twice, and the two copies have different ids.
So there is no way to convert a Douyin link into a TikTok one, and no tool can fetch a Douyin video through TikTok. If you have a douyin.com link, it has to be handled as Douyin.
The share forms
v.douyin.com/<code> — what the Douyin app's Share button produces. It is a short code rather than the video id, so it has to be followed to find the real address.
douyin.com/video/<id> — the canonical form, with the numeric video id.
douyin.com/discover?modal_id=<id> — what the web player shows when a video is opened from a feed rather than its own page. The modal_id IS the video id.
All three are accepted. The first two used to be refused here, which meant the link most people actually have — the one from the app — did not work. Fixed 2026-09-19.
What to expect from the file
Douyin serves a rendition without the on-screen watermark for many videos, and that is what you get when it exists. Where it does not, the watermark is part of the video and no tool can remove it without re-encoding and cropping.
Douyin is more aggressive than TikTok about regional availability. A video that plays in China may not be reachable from elsewhere at all, in which case there is no public file to fetch.
FAQ
Can I open a Douyin video in TikTok?
No. They are separate services with separate catalogues and separate ids.
Does a v.douyin.com share link work?
Yes. It is followed to the real video address automatically.
Is the watermark removed?
Where Douyin offers a clean rendition, that is what you get. Where it does not, the watermark is part of the video itself.
Why do some Douyin videos fail?
Usually regional restriction — Douyin is stricter about this than TikTok. If the page does not load for you, there is nothing to fetch.
Do I need the Douyin app?
No. Everything happens in your browser.
Do I need an account?
No. VoomReel never signs in.
