How to Download Reddit GIFs and Galleries
Updated 2026-09-19
Two Reddit post types trip people up: the ones labelled GIF, which are really silent video, and galleries, which are several images behind one link. Here is what is going on with each.
- 1Copy the post link
Share → Copy link from the app or the address bar on the web. The short reddit.com/r/…/s/… form works.
- 2Paste it into VoomReel
Paste into the box on the home page.
- 3Download
A GIF post returns a video file; an image post returns the picture.
Reddit GIFs are silent MP4s
When something is posted as a GIF, Reddit converts it to video and serves it from v.redd.it like any other clip. The GIF badge is a label, not a format. So what you save is an MP4 — smaller and better looking than the GIF would have been.
It has no audio track, because the source had none. A silent file here is correct, not a failed download. This is different from the other silent-Reddit problem, where a real video with sound loses it because Reddit stores picture and audio separately — that one VoomReel fixes by merging the two halves.
Galleries are several posts in a trench coat
A gallery post holds multiple images under one URL, and Reddit exposes them differently depending on how the post was made and which client rendered it. What comes back is what the post actually exposes, which can be fewer items than you see swiping on the page.
If you need one specific image, open it on its own — tapping an image in a gallery usually gives you a direct i.redd.it address, and that is unambiguous.
Posts that are links, not media
Plenty of Reddit posts are links to somewhere else — a YouTube video, a news site, an imgur album. The Reddit post contains no file of its own, so there is nothing to fetch from it.
Open the destination and use its own link. VoomReel handles YouTube and most of the other big ones directly.
FAQ
Why did my Reddit GIF save as an MP4?
Because that is what it is. Reddit converts GIF posts to silent video on upload.
Why is it silent?
GIFs have no audio, so the converted video has none either. Nothing was lost.
Can I get all images from a gallery at once?
You get what the post exposes, which may be fewer than you see. For a specific image, open it and use its i.redd.it address.
The post just links to YouTube. Can I download it?
Not from the Reddit URL — there is no file there. Use the YouTube link itself.
Do image posts work?
Yes. An image post returns the picture at the size Reddit stores it.
Do I need a Reddit account?
No. VoomReel never signs in, which is also why private subreddits are out of reach.
