Download Reddit Photos

Updated 2026-09-20

Reddit has no save button for a picture, and right-clicking often hands you the resized preview rather than the file someone actually uploaded. Paste the post link instead and you get the original.

  1. 1
    Copy the post link

Open the post, tap Share, then Copy link. The long reddit.com/r/…/comments/… form and the short reddit.com/r/…/s/… one the app produces both work.

  2. 2
    Paste it into VoomReel

Open the home page and paste the link into the box.

  3. 3
    Download

Tap Download. You get the image file itself — .jpg, .png or .webp, whichever was uploaded.

You get the upload, not the preview

Reddit keeps several copies of every picture. The one on the feed is a resized preview built for fast scrolling, and it is usually what a right-click saves you — which is why images saved that way look soft when you open them properly.

The original lives on i.redd.it, Reddit's own image host, at whatever size the poster submitted. That is the file you get here, unmodified and unrecompressed.

Why a picture is harder for a downloader than a video

This is the part worth explaining, because it is why plenty of tools fail on image posts while handling videos fine.

The usual machinery for this is a video extractor. Hand it a Reddit post and it follows the post to the image, finds a JPEG where it expected a video stream, and gives up with an error — not because anything is wrong, but because there is no video in it.

The useful detail is that the error names the image it just found. Reading the address out of the failure is both faster and more reliable than asking Reddit again: Reddit's public JSON endpoint refuses requests from most servers outright, and its RSS feed starts rate-limiting within a few requests. The answer we already have costs nothing and cannot be throttled.

The file comes through us, and that is deliberate

Reddit's image host does not send the header a browser needs in order to fetch a file from another site and save it. Without that header the browser will display the picture and refuse to download it.

So Reddit photos are streamed through VoomReel rather than fetched by your browser directly. Nothing is stored — the bytes pass straight through — but it does mean a Reddit photo behaves slightly differently from an Instagram one, which the browser can fetch by itself.

Galleries give you what can be resolved

A single-image post is straightforward. A gallery — the multi-picture format with arrows — is stored differently, and Reddit does not always expose every item in a way that can be read from outside.

So a gallery may hand back fewer pictures than you can see in the post. Where that happens, opening each image in its own tab and copying that link is the reliable fallback.

GIFs are usually not GIFs

Most animated Reddit posts are not .gif files. Reddit converts them to video on upload, exactly as X does, because a video of the same animation is a fraction of the size.

That means an animated post downloads as an MP4 and is silent — not because the audio was lost, but because there never was any.

What will not download

Private subreddits, and anything quarantined behind a click-through you would have to be logged in to pass. VoomReel never signs in, so it sees what a signed-out visitor sees.

Deleted posts, and posts whose image was removed by a moderator.

Pictures that were never hosted on Reddit. Plenty of posts are links out to Imgur, a news site or a personal blog — those are that site's files, not Reddit's.

Using the picture afterwards

Saving something to look at later is ordinarily fine. Reposting it, or presenting someone else's photograph as your own, is a different question, and the answer belongs to whoever took it.

Reddit posts are also frequently reposts themselves. The account that posted it is often not the person who owns it.

FAQ

Can I download Reddit images for free?

Yes. No account, no sign-up, no limit.

Do I get the full-size picture?

Yes — the file on i.redd.it at the size it was uploaded, not the resized feed preview.

What format will it be?

Whatever was uploaded: .jpg, .png or .webp. Nothing is converted, so nothing is re-compressed.

Does a short reddit.com/r/…/s/… link work?

Yes. The short link the mobile app copies is resolved automatically.

Why does my gallery post only give some of the images?

Reddit does not expose every gallery item readably from outside. Open the individual image and copy that link instead.

Why is my animated post an MP4 with no sound?

Because Reddit converts animations to video on upload and they have no audio track. Nothing was lost.

Can I download from a private subreddit?

No. Only posts visible to a signed-out visitor can be fetched.

The picture is hosted on Imgur — will that work?

Not through a Reddit link. That post is a link out to another site rather than an image stored on Reddit.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes, in Safari or any browser. Tap Share, then Save Image or Save to Files.
