Download Facebook Photos

Updated 2026-10-02

Facebook has no download button on a photo, and screenshotting one costs you most of its resolution. Paste the photo's link instead and you get the picture Facebook is actually serving.

  1. 1
    Copy the photo link

Open the photo itself, tap the three dots and Copy link, or use the address bar. facebook.com/photo links, /posts/ links and the share/ short links all work.

  2. 2
    Paste it into VoomReel

Open the home page and paste the link into the box.

  3. 3
    Download

Tap Download. You get the picture as Facebook stores it — almost always a .jpg, sometimes a .png.

What you get, and what Facebook actually stores

Facebook re-encodes every photo on upload, so the copy on Facebook is already not the photographer's original — that is true of any platform, and nothing can undo it. What you get here is the largest public version Facebook serves, typically 2,048 pixels or more on the long side, rather than the scaled copy shown in your feed.

A screenshot, by comparison, is limited to the size of your screen and re-compressed by the screenshot itself. Even on a large monitor it is a meaningful step down.

How the picture is found

Every public Facebook photo page carries its own preview image, for the sake of link previews in messaging apps and on other sites. On a photo's own page that is the full-size picture, and a signed-out browser can see it, which is why no account is involved anywhere in this.

The usual video machinery cannot help here at all — handed a photo post it fails before it gets anywhere near the picture. The page itself is what answers, so a photo takes a different route from a Facebook video.

A video post is never served as a still

This is worth stating plainly, because it is the way this feature could quietly go wrong. A post containing a video also carries a preview image: the poster frame. It would be easy to hand that over and call it a photo.

It would also be worse than failing. Someone who asked for a video and received a single frame has been given a confidently wrong answer. So a link to a reel or a video, or a post that advertises one, is left to the video path, even when that path then fails.

The file comes through us

Facebook's image host does not send the header a browser needs in order to fetch a file from another site and save it, so the picture is streamed through VoomReel rather than fetched by your browser directly. Nothing is stored on the way past.

Only Facebook's own image hosts are accepted. The address is read off a web page, and a web page is not something to trust blindly.

Albums and multi-photo posts

A link to a whole post gives you the preview Facebook shows for that post, which is smaller than the photo itself. Facebook gives each picture its own page and address, so open the photo you want first and copy that link — then you get it at full size.

Clicking through to the individual photo is worth the extra step: the link from an album or a post points at the post, not the picture.

Does the person know you saved their photo?

No. Facebook sends no notification when a photo is downloaded, and VoomReel never signs in to Facebook: the picture is fetched the way any signed-out visitor would see it, so nothing connects the download to your account.

All of your own photos at once

VoomReel saves one public photo per link. If what you want is every photo you have posted — before closing an account, say — Facebook's own Download your information tool packs them into a zip. It is in Settings, under Your information.

That zip is a maze of folders with the dates stripped off the files. VoomReel's Fix your export page, at voomreel.com/my-data-export, opens it in your browser and gives the photos back with their real dates; nothing is uploaded.

What will not download

Anything not public. Friends-only posts, private groups, and anything requiring a login have no public copy, and VoomReel never signs in.

Profile and cover photos on locked-down accounts, for the same reason.

Deleted posts.

If the link opens a login wall in your own browser while signed out, no tool can do better.

A note on other people's photographs

Saving a picture for yourself is ordinarily fine. Republishing one, especially a photo of a person, is a different matter, and consent belongs to the people in it rather than to whoever posted it.

This matters more on Facebook than on most platforms, because so much of what is on it is photographs of private individuals.

FAQ

Can I download Facebook photos without an account?

Yes. Only public posts work, which is exactly what a signed-out visitor can already see.

Do I get the full-size photo?

From the photo's own link, yes: the largest copy Facebook serves publicly, typically 2,048 pixels or more on the long side. A link to a whole post gives its smaller preview.

Is it the original file?

No, and no tool can give you that. Facebook re-encodes every upload; what exists publicly is that re-encoded copy.

What format is it?

Almost always a .jpg; some pictures, graphics mostly, are stored as .png and arrive as .png. Nothing is converted or re-compressed on the way to you.

Do share/ links work?

Yes. The short facebook.com/share/ links the app copies are resolved automatically.

Can I download a whole album at once?

No. Open each photo and copy its link — Facebook gives every picture in an album its own address. For all of your own photos, use Facebook's Download your information.

Can I download a private or friends-only photo?

No. Only content visible to a signed-out visitor can be fetched.

Will the person know?

No. Facebook sends no notification for a download, and VoomReel never signs in, so nothing ties the download to you.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes, in Safari or any browser. The photo is saved to Files ▸ Downloads; open it there and tap Share → Save Image to put it in Photos.

Does it work on a PC or an Android phone?

Yes. On a computer the photo goes to your browser's downloads; on Android, to the Downloads folder, and it shows up in the Gallery.
