Why Your Downloaded Video Has No Sound

Updated 2026-10-01

The video plays with sound on the platform, the download says it succeeded, and the file is silent. It is one of the most common complaints about video downloaders, and it almost always comes down to one of five causes. Here is how to tell which one you have, and which of them can actually be fixed.

  1. 1
    Check the original

Play the post on the platform itself with the sound on. If it is silent there too, or the platform says the sound is unavailable, the file is fine and the post is muted.

  2. 2
    Try another player

Open the file in VLC or a web browser. If it has sound there but not in your phone's gallery or the Windows player, the audio format is the problem, not a missing track.

  3. 3
    Download it again with sound

Paste the post's link into VoomReel and download it again. It fetches the picture and the sound, joins them into one MP4 and asks for AAC audio first, which plays everywhere.

Cause 1: the picture and the sound are separate files

Many platforms do not store a video as one file. YouTube, Reddit, Niconico and the higher qualities on bilibili.tv keep the picture and the sound as two separate streams and play them together in the page. A tool that takes the stream the address points at and stops hands you a video that plays perfectly with no audio — nothing errored, the sound was simply never fetched.

This is the most common cause by far. The fix is a tool that fetches both streams and joins them, which VoomReel does for every platform that stores them apart.

Cause 2: the platform sent a silent copy

This one is harder to see. Facebook leaves the sound out of what it sends to some server addresses, for some posts: the format list simply contains no audio, so no setting can bring it back. Instagram does something similar video by video, where some video addresses carry only the picture.

We measured it. The same Facebook reel came back silent from one server and with sound from another network and from a home connection. VoomReel checks each result for a sound track and, when it is missing, fetches the post again from a network that is being sent the sound.

Cause 3: the sound is there, but your player ignores it

A file can contain audio your player does not decode. The usual culprit is Opus sound inside an MP4: perfectly legal, and it plays in Chrome, Firefox and VLC — but QuickTime, the stock Windows player and the iPhone's Photos app show the picture and stay silent.

If the file has sound in VLC or a browser and not in your gallery, this is your cause. VoomReel asks for AAC sound first for exactly this reason, so its MP4s play with sound everywhere.

Cause 4: the post itself is muted

Platforms mute videos, usually over music rights. TikTok replaces a sound it cannot use with a notice that the sound is unavailable, and Facebook and Instagram can mute a whole video or part of it. A muted post downloads muted, because silence is what the platform serves to everyone.

Play the post on the platform with the sound on before blaming the file. If it is silent there, no downloader can restore it.

Cause 5: it never had sound

Some things that look like videos are silent by design. A GIF on X downloads as an MP4 because that is how X stores it, but it is a silent loop. GIF-style posts on Reddit and ordinary GIFs on Giphy are the same; a Giphy Clip is the exception and downloads with its sound.

How to check what a file contains

On a computer, open the file in VLC and look at Tools ▸ Codec Information (Window ▸ Media Information on a Mac). A complete file lists two streams, one video and one audio. If only a video stream is listed, the sound was never downloaded — cause 1, 2 or 4. If an audio stream is listed but another player stays silent, it is cause 3.

If you only wanted the sound

The ♪ MP3 button under each video in VoomReel saves just the audio as a 192 kbit/s MP3. It only appears when a sound track actually arrived, so it doubles as a quick check that the video has one.

FAQ

Why does my downloaded Facebook video have no sound?

Either the download took the picture without the sound, or Facebook sent the downloader's server a copy without audio, which it does for some addresses. Download it again with VoomReel: it checks for a sound track and fetches from another network when one is missing.

Why is my downloaded Reddit video silent?

Reddit stores the picture and the sound as separate files. A tool has to fetch both and join them; VoomReel does.

Why does my downloaded YouTube video have no sound on iPhone or Windows?

Often it does have sound, in Opus format inside an MP4, which Photos and the stock Windows player ignore. Play it in VLC to confirm. VoomReel asks for AAC audio first, so its files play everywhere.

Why does my downloaded TikTok have no sound?

Most often the post itself is muted: TikTok removes sounds it is not licensed to use, and a muted post downloads muted. Play it in TikTok first.

Why does my X (Twitter) download have no sound?

If it was a GIF, it never had any: X stores GIFs as silent MP4 loops. A real video on X carries its sound in the same file and downloads with it.

Can the sound be added back to a silent file?

Only by downloading again. If the sound was never fetched, the file has nothing to recover, so paste the link into a tool that fetches both streams.

How do I check whether a file has an audio track?

Open it in VLC and look at the codec information. A complete file shows one video stream and one audio stream.
