Where Do Downloaded Videos Go on iPhone?
Updated 2026-10-01
You tap Download, something happens, and the video is not in Photos. On an iPhone that is normal: Safari keeps downloads in the Files app, and getting a video into your photo library is one more step. Here is where to look, and how to move it.
- 1Open the Files app
Find Files on your home screen or in the App Library, then open Downloads — Safari's download folder.
- 2Open the video
Tap the video to play it. It is an ordinary MP4 file.
- 3Save it to Photos
Tap the Share icon, then Save Video. The video now appears in Photos, with your recent items.
Why downloads do not go straight to Photos
iOS keeps the two apart on purpose. Safari treats a downloaded video like any other file and puts it in the Files app; Photos only takes in what you save to it. That is why a download can succeed and still seem to have vanished.
Where exactly the Downloads folder is
By default Safari saves to a Downloads folder in iCloud Drive, or on the iPhone itself when iCloud Drive is off. Safari's Downloads option in Settings shows which one it uses, and lets you change it.
Why some videos open in a new tab instead
Some platforms let your browser fetch the video straight from their own servers. On iPhone that can open the video in a new Safari tab rather than saving a file. Nothing is lost: tap the Share icon on that tab and choose Save Video, and it goes to Photos the same way.
Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and X
The steps are the same whichever platform the video came from. Facebook and TikTok downloads from VoomReel arrive as a file in Files ▸ Downloads; Instagram and X videos may open in a tab first. Either way, Share → Save Video puts them in Photos.
If the video is not in Files either
Check that the download finished. A long video can take a while, and Safari shows its progress in its downloads list. If it never started, the post may be private or deleted — open the link in a private tab to see whether it plays for a signed-out visitor.
If you use Chrome or another browser on iPhone, its downloads usually go to its own folder in Files rather than to Safari's Downloads; look under On My iPhone for a folder with the browser's name.
Freeing up space afterwards
Once a video is in Photos, the copy in Files ▸ Downloads is a duplicate. Delete it there — press and hold the file, then choose Delete — to get the space back.
