Downloaded Video Won't Play? Causes and Fixes

Updated 2026-10-02

A download that will not play is usually one of four things: the file never finished, it is not really a video, it uses a codec your player does not have, or the player is the problem. Each has a quick check.

  1. 1
    Check the file size

A few kilobytes, or far less than the video's length suggests, means the download did not finish or is not a video. Download it again.

  2. 2
    Try another player

Open it in VLC, which is free and plays nearly every format. If VLC plays it, the file is fine and your usual player lacks the codec.

  3. 3
    Check the codec

VLC's Tools ▸ Codec Information names the video codec. H.264 plays everywhere; HEVC, AV1 and VP9 do not.

The download did not finish

Phones especially can drop a download when the screen locks or the connection changes. The file is still there, with the right name, but it stops partway or will not open at all. The size gives it away: compare it with the video's length, and download it again on a steady connection.

It is not actually a video

Some downloaders save whatever the server answered under a .mp4 name. When that answer was an error page or a streaming playlist rather than the video, you get a file a few kilobytes long that no player can open. In a text editor it shows readable text, where a real video would be gibberish.

We made this mistake ourselves once, with Dailymotion, which sends a playlist instead of a single file. VoomReel now builds the real video from that playlist on the server.

Your player does not have the codec

A video file is a container — MP4, WebM, MKV — around a stream in a particular codec, and the codec decides whether it plays. H.264 plays on practically everything. HEVC (H.265) needs the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store in Windows' own player, unless the PC came with them; VLC plays it without them. AV1 and VP9 are newer, and older phones, TVs and editors often cannot decode them.

Where a platform offers an H.264 copy, VoomReel prefers it for exactly this reason.

Sound over a black picture, or a picture with no sound

Either half can be the one your player cannot decode. A black screen with working sound usually means an unsupported video codec. A silent picture has more causes, including platforms that serve a copy with no sound at all, and is covered in the guide on downloaded videos with no sound.

On iPhone and iPad

The Files app previews ordinary MP4 videos. If a file will not open there, VLC for iOS, a free app, plays nearly any format, which tells you whether the file or the codec is at fault.

Converting as a last resort

If the video has to work in a particular player or editor, re-encode it to H.264 with a free converter such as HandBrake. That costs a little quality and takes time, which is why getting an H.264 copy in the first place is better.

FAQ

Why won't my downloaded video play on Windows?

Most often it is HEVC (H.265), which Windows' own player only plays with the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store. VLC plays it without them.

Why won't my downloaded video play on iPhone?

Usually because the download did not finish, or the file uses a codec iOS does not support. Check the file size first, then try VLC for iOS.

The file is only a few KB. What happened?

An error page or a playlist was saved instead of the video. Download it again; if it keeps happening, the tool is saving the wrong thing.

Does renaming the file to .mp4 help?

No. The name does not change what is inside, and players go by the contents, so a good file rarely fails because of its name.

Will VLC play it?

Almost certainly, if the file is a complete video. VLC carries its own codecs, so it is the quickest way to tell a broken file from a missing codec.

Can a broken download be repaired?

Rarely, and it is not worth the effort: downloading it again is faster.
