Video Won't Save to Your Camera Roll? Why, and the Fix
Updated 2026-10-02
A video that will not appear in your camera roll has usually been saved — just not where you are looking. When it really will not go in, the reason is almost always the format or a full phone. Here is how to tell which, and what to do.
- 1Find the file
On iPhone, open Files ▸ Downloads. On Android, open the Files app ▸ Downloads.
- 2Open it
Tap the video so it plays.
- 3Save it to Photos
On iPhone, tap Share → Save Video. On Android, open the Gallery or Google Photos and look in the Download album.
On iPhone, a download is not in Photos yet
Safari saves every download to the Files app, and Photos only holds what is saved to it. So a finished download can look as if it vanished. Open it in Files ▸ Downloads and tap Share → Save Video; that is the step that puts it in your camera roll.
When Save Video is missing
If Save Video is not in the share menu, the format is usually the reason: Photos only takes videos it can play, and a WebM file, for one, is not among them. The file is not broken. Convert it to MP4 and the option appears.
When the save does nothing
If Save Video is there but the video never shows up, check the space left: a nearly full iPhone stops taking new videos without much warning. Settings ▸ General ▸ iPhone Storage shows what is left.
Videos that open in a tab
Some downloads open in a new Safari tab instead of saving a file — with VoomReel, Instagram, X, Twitch and Snapchat videos do, because the browser fetches them straight from the platform. That tab has its own Share button, and Save Video works from there directly.
On Android, check the Download album
Android saves downloads to the Downloads folder, and Gallery apps list it as a Download album, usually within seconds. If yours does not show it, the video is still in the Files app ▸ Downloads, and plays from there.
FAQ
Why is my downloaded video not in Photos?
Because Safari saves downloads to Files, not Photos. Open it in Files ▸ Downloads and tap Share → Save Video.
Why is there no Save Video option?
Usually because the file is in a format Photos cannot take, such as WebM. Convert it to MP4 and the option appears.
Why does Save Video do nothing?
Most often the iPhone is out of space. Settings ▸ General ▸ iPhone Storage shows how much is left.
Why don't downloaded videos show in my Android Gallery?
They are in Files ▸ Downloads. Most Gallery apps list that folder as a Download album; if yours does not, open the video from Files.
Can VoomReel save straight to my camera roll?
Not on iPhone: a web page can only hand a file to Safari, and saving it to Photos is your tap. On Android the download is in the Gallery already.
